[提要] 文章从定义、学科定位、研究对象、研究方法、学科价值等方面对医学社会史进行了深入的探讨。作者认为：医学社会史是从社会史的角度，运用多学科的研究方法，通过对历史上人们医药活动的考察来认识社会（文化）的形态及其变迁的历史学分支学科；其研究对象包括历史上人们医药活动的共时性结构和历时性变迁；其研究方法要求做到传统史学方法现代化，西方史学方法本土化以及其他学科方法史学化；从学科价值上看，医学社会史的研究不仅可以丰富社会史的内涵，而且可以促使史学工作者重新审视历史学的对象和价值。

A Theoretical Guidance Concerning the Social History of Medicine

Abstract: The article states the author’s opinions on the social history of medicine in the light of its definition, researching targets and approaches, as well as subject values and subject situation. As a result, the author holds the belief that social history of medicine is a branch of history which applies cross-discipline researching methods to the studies of human medical activities ever since, hence, recognizes the social structure and its vicissitudes. From the angle of social history, this subject probes the medical activities from the prehistoric period till the present time. Its researching targets encompass the co-existing structures and changes in medical activities for all different periods of history. As for researching approaches, the combination of traditional means’ modernization and western ways’ civilization are required. Considering its subject values, not only can this research enrich the connotation of social history, but stimulate the historians to reconsider the targets and significance of history.

医学社会史是20世纪初以来的“新史学”向纵深发展而产生的一门社会史分支学科。在整个社会史大家族中，它可以说是较年轻且影响较小的成员，以至于在一些中国社会史学术回顾中几乎被忽略。①然而，这并不意味着医学社会史是一门无足轻重的学科，也并不意味着它的研究没有取得多大进展。事实上，医学社会史是最贴近大众的历史，它不仅关注大众的生命健康，而且关注大众的社会生活，是最能解释人类本质属性（生物性与社会性统一）的历史，因而它理应从社会史的边缘渐入社会史的中心。正是基于它的重要地位和潜在价值，一些学者早在上个世纪后期就涉足该领域，并取得了一些开创性的成果。②当然，这离医学社会史学科的成熟还有较大距离。从理论上看，还没有形成完整的医学社会史理论体系，比如什么是医学社会史，其学科定位在哪，其研究对象是什么，采用什么研究方法，其价值何在等问题，史学界至今仍无定论；从实践上看，医学社会史的研究成果也是寥若晨星，且研究取向多陷入偏狭。正如冯尔康所言：“像人群生命史，处于试着做的态度，往哪里做，怎么做，都还在摸索之中。” [1](p93)这里的“人群生命史”可以看作是“医学社会史”相近的一种表达。这些问题正是医药学论文
