When a man is considered to be of good virtues, he is supposed to be loyal and brave in the first place. Coincidently these virtues are obviously seen in a dog as well.
It is very difficult to tell precisely why dogs are considered to be among the options for a man's best friends, particularly given the fact that dogs rank fairly high in the list. However, It seems to me that man is always pursuing a number of virtues in his life, but scarcely do they get a chance to display such good qualities. Thus, they need some substitutes for themselves, and dogs are just suitable to display such qualities, though mostly very much unconciously. I think men keep dogs as nice companions at least on the basis of such a thought: though I might not be the man to be heroic, but you see, I do have a friend with such noblest virtues, which, in turn, makes me a great man as well.
